Acrylic & mixed medium on canvas This painting is a pure exploration in paint, its movement, form and freedom, and is based on the work of Jackson Pollock and his influence on me during this present stage of development. Ra tapu means Sunday or sacred day in Maori language and means to show all the wonder, surprise and random beauty that is promised in the new day, illuminated by a big stylized red sun (Ra) spiral. My early art has been borne of an overly disciplined childhood and the orderly rules of graphic art and design, so freedom in painting is a new experience I am having as an adult. This work also represents a new phase in my career now that my family depends on my art for our living. That of the `Bread and Butter` painting for example, where I am challenged to produce a faster, less personal and cheaper piece in order to fund and justify the time I spend on honing my true craft. |
