Embossed Culture in Paua Colours - M04123 |
PVA and acrylic on 36mm box canvas.
Size: 2 pieces each 230x300mm This painting is a pure exploration in paint, its movement and form and freedom but overlaid with the designs of the Maori carving tradition, and is based on the work of Jackson Pollock and his influence on me during this present stage of development. This piece also highlights the relationship in Maoridom between traditional design and reoccurring patterns in nature including leaf growth patterns. The relief glue panels give the dimension of carving in a contemporary way, accentuated by metallic highlights. I wish to explore modern techniques, and materials from the point of view of my Ancestors, including the paradox of materialism and earning a living, and quantity and speed vs. quality and craftsmanship. These are the issues which cause conflict within modern Maori, and permeate not only the work, but the doing. |
