Pollock Carving Triptych - M04134 |
Size: 3 pieces each 258x205mm
PVA and acrylic on 20mm box canvas This painting is a pure exploration in paint, its movement and form and freedom but overlaid with the designs of the Maori carving tradition, and is based on the work of Jackson Pollock and his influence on me during this present stage of development. This work is part of a concept I have been working on, that of interactive art. Art that can inspire peoples own creativity, like building blocks for grown-ups. For this reason we have wired the pieces on each side so they can hang any way and in any formation. The relief glue panels give the dimension of carving in a contemporary way, accentuated by metallic highlights. I wish to explore modern techniques, and materials from the point of view of my Ancestors, including the paradox of materialism and earning a living, and quantity and speed vs. quality and craftsmanship. These are the issues which cause conflict within modern Maori, and permeate not only the work, but the doing. |
