Europe's annual rendez-vous for canoe lovers, every second weekend of July.
Every year international toppers come to this event all the way from Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Sweden, Italy, England, Germany, France, Spain etcetera for the North Sea Outrigger Canoe Championships and Surf Ski ‘world series’. The Outrigger canoes are called Va’a or Waka Ama.
The special competition in the 6-person Outrigger Canoe, the OC6 match, which is fully in Polynesian style has now been given the name OC6 Matariki Cup.
It is very special indeed that this championship takes place in the last week of the Matariki festivals (in celebration of the Maori New Year) that are being held in New Zealand in this time of year.
Matariki Gallery will honor the winners in an appropriate way.
Matariki Gallery will be present this weekend with a selection of her large collection of Maori symbolic pendants and giftware which are being sold on location.
